What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a simple surgical procedure performed to correct a tongue-tie or a lip-tie, which is addressed during the procedure. The tongue-tie or lip-tie is a small fold of tissue that connects the lips, tongue, or cheeks to the underlying structures of the mouth. When the tongue-tie/lip-tie is abnormally positioned, too tight, or restrictive, it can lead to various issues, including speech difficulties, restricted movement, and dental problems. A frenectomy involves the removal or loosening of the tongue-tie/lip-tie to alleviate these concerns and improve oral function and comfort.

Types of Frenectomies

There are several types of frenectomies, depending on the location of the tongue-tie/lip-tie and the specific issues it may be causing:

Tongue-Tie:

This procedure involves removing or releasing the tongue-tie/lip-tie, the band of tissue that connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Tongue-tie frenectomies are often performed to address tongue tie, a condition in which the tongue-tie/lip-tie restricts tongue movement and can cause breastfeeding challenges, interfere with speech, eating, breathing, and oral hygiene.

Labial Frenectomy:

Labial frenectomies involve the removal or release of the tongue-tie/lip-tie, the band of tissue that connects the lips to the gums. We may recommend this procedure to address issues such as gum recession, spacing between the front teeth, or difficulty wearing dentures or orthodontic appliances.

Signs and Symptoms of Needing a Frenectomy

Some signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for a frenectomy include:

If you or your child are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is essential to consult with a dentist or oral surgeon for a thorough evaluation and personalized treatment recommendations.

What are the Benefits of Getting a Frenectomy?

The benefits of getting a frenectomy from a dentist Fulton IL loves may include:

By addressing the underlying issues caused by a tight or restrictive tongue-tie/lip-tie, a frenectomy can help improve overall oral health and quality of life.

What to Expect When Getting a Frenectomy

Before the frenectomy procedure, your dentist will comprehensively evaluate your oral health and discuss the treatment plan with you, including the type of frenectomy recommended and any necessary preparations. The procedure itself is typically performed using local anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

During the frenectomy, Dr. Mindy or Dr. Jackie will carefully remove or release the tongue-tie/lip-tie using precision techniques, minimizing discomfort and promoting optimal healing. The procedure is usually quick and straightforward, with minimal downtime and a relatively rapid recovery.

Recovery and Follow-Up

After the frenectomy, you may experience some mild discomfort, swelling, or bleeding at the treatment site. Your dentist will provide detailed instructions on caring for the area, including gentle oral hygiene practices and any necessary dietary restrictions. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days and experience significant improvement in their symptoms shortly after that.

We may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure the tongue-tie/lip-tie is healing properly. Dr. Mindy or Dr. Jackie, in conjunction with our lactation consultant, will also guide exercises or stretches to help maintain optimal mobility and prevent tongue-tie/lip-tie reattachment.

Treatment Coordinator

I grew up in the Davenport/Bettendorf area. I’ve always loved the sense of community here. It’s been so nice to come full circle and be back in the place that feels most like home.

I graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 2020. I’m a Covid senior! I definitely learned how to roll with the punches during such a unique senior year experience.
After graduation, I went to Scott Community College with the intention of becoming an English professor. Writing has been a consistent passion of mine! But after a few semesters, I felt the urge for adventure and decided to move to Austin, Texas on a whim! It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

While in Austin, I started working in Oral Surgery. Over time, I realized I wanted a better work/life balance while still being in a profession that helps people feel confident and cared for. When I moved back to the Quad Cities, I was lucky enough to find Cornerstone, where work/life balance is truly valued!

When I returned to Iowa, I quickly discovered how tough the job market could be! I spent plenty of time scrolling Indeed, hoping to find something that felt like “the one.” Once I met our office manager, Alina, I knew Cornerstone could be that perfect fit. Since joining the team February 2025, I’ve been given the freedom to use my creativity and grow within my role. I love that this position continues to evolve as I do!

My husband and I are coming up on two years of marriage, but we just had our official wedding celebration in September of 2025! We had the best time celebrating with our families. We don’t have pets or kids yet, but we both hope for a big family someday. I get to visit my parents often, and my little sister whenever she comes home from college. Family is such a huge part of my life, and being close to them again means so much to me!

It’s hard to choose a favorite Cornerstone core value, because each one spoke to me from the start. If I had to pick, I’d say The Golden Rule resonates most. No matter our differences, the Cornerstone team shows up every day with compassion and understanding. It’s comforting to know I’m surrounded by people who treat both their teammates and patients with genuine kindness and respect.
